Practice Written Test

  1. Upon the approach of an overtaking emergency vehicle flashing its lights, drivers in the HOV (diamond) lane of a freeway shall:
    1. Ignore the emergency vehicle, especially if it's exceeding the speed limit.
    2. Speed up, then exit that lane at the next opening.
    3. Yield to the emergency vehicle by immediately exiting the lane, if they can do so safely.
  2. California is one of a handful of states with an allowable Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of less than .10%. Drivers 21 and older are presumed to be Driving Under the Influence (DUI) with a BAC of at least:
    1. 0.10%
    2. 0.08%
    3. 0.05%
  3. You must never drive faster, under the "Basic Speed Law," than:
    1. The speed of other traffic.
    2. It is safe to do so, with due consideration to weather, visibility, traffic and safety of others.
    3. It's always up to the individual driver to determine a reasonable and prudent speed.
  4. Turn signals must be given continuously for:
    1. 200 ft. Before turning.
    2. 100 ft. Before turning.
    3. 3 to 5 seconds before turning.
  5. Pedestrian right-of-way in crosswalks:
    1. Pedestrians in a crosswalk have right-of-way only in business districts.
    2. Pedestrians are entitled to the right-of-way when crossing in a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk.
    3. Pedestrians only have right-of-way in a marked crosswalk.
  6. Stops required at railway crossings:
    1. All vehicles must stop before crossing a railway grade crossing-- if signals or flagmen warn of the approach of a train.
    2. Only vehicles carrying inflammable liquids or explosive substances must stop.
    3. You don't have to stop if you can't see a train coming.
  7. Who may not be cited for violating the child safety belt and passenger restraint requirements for infants and children through age 15?
    1. Parent who permit their child(ren) to travel unrestrained.
    2. Drivers transporting unrestrained children whose parents are not in the vehicle.
    3. Unrestrained children.
  8. A driver meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing shall stop, unless:
    1. The school bus is stopped at a place or intersection where a traffic officer or a traffic signal controls traffic.
    2. The driver meeting the school bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway (one divided into two or more roadways by barriers or by a dividing section at least two feet wide, unpaved or bordered with curbs, double parallel lines or other markings).
    3. Either of the above.
  9. If your vehicle is disabled on the roadway and is equipped with a working "four-way flasher" device:
    1. You may activate the flashers if you reasonably believe your vehicle creates a hazard.
    2. You must activate the flashers as a warning to other motorists.
    3. You need to activate the flashers only if disabled 30 minutes or later after sunset.
  10. This sign means:
    1. No passing.
    2. Cross traffic must give you the right-of-way.
    3. Let cross traffic go by first.
  11. Pulling out from curb parking space:
    1. No person shall start the movement of a parked vehicle until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.
    2. Give arm signal and sound horn as warning-- then start moving away from curb.

    1. Drivers, if they or their passengers (16 or older) are unrestrained.
    2. Passengers (16 or older) who are unrestrained.
    3. The registered owner who is not present in the vehicle.
  18. A driver convicted of passing a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights can be punished as follows:
    1. By a fine of up to $100 for each violation, no matter how many.
    2. Not at all-- because the bus is stopped, so it's not a moving violation.
    3. By a $150-$250 first offense fine, a $500-$1000 second offense fine, and a one-year suspension for a third offense within three years.
  19. If a police officer or fire fighter on duty tells you to proceed against a red traffic light, you should:
    1. Report him to police authorities.
    2. Do as he tells you.
    3. Obey the red "stop" light.
  20. This sign means:
    1. Sidewalk ends.
    2. Pedestrian crossing.
    3. Yield to oncoming traffic.
  21. When entering or crossing a highway from public or private property, or from an alley, which must yield the right-of-way?
    1. The car entering the highway.
    2. The car traveling on the highway.

  22. If you are arrested for driving under the influence and you refuse to submit to a chemical test of alcohol in your body, your license will be suspended for:

  24. If a left turn can be made from two designated left-turn lanes, you can start a "U" turn from:

  27. If there is a stop sign at a corner without a limit line, you must first stop:
    1. Out far enough to be able to see cross traffic.
    2. After crossing the crosswalk.
