Practice Written Test
- Upon the approach of an overtaking emergency vehicle flashing
its lights, drivers in the HOV (diamond) lane of a freeway shall:
- Ignore
the emergency vehicle, especially if it's exceeding the speed
limit.
- Speed
up, then exit that lane at the next opening.
- Yield
to the emergency vehicle by immediately exiting the lane,
if they can do so safely.
- California is one of a handful of states with an allowable
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of less than .10%. Drivers 21 and
older are presumed to be Driving Under the Influence (DUI) with
a BAC of at least:
- 0.10%
- 0.08%
- 0.05%
- You must never drive faster, under the "Basic Speed
Law," than:
- The speed
of other traffic.
- It
is safe to do so, with due consideration to weather, visibility,
traffic and safety of others.
- It's
always up to the individual driver to determine a reasonable
and prudent speed.
- Turn signals must be given continuously for:
- 200 ft.
Before turning.
- 100
ft. Before turning.
- 3 to
5 seconds before turning.
- Pedestrian right-of-way in crosswalks:
- Pedestrians
in a crosswalk have right-of-way only in business districts.
- Pedestrians
are entitled to the right-of-way when crossing in a marked
crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk.
- Pedestrians
only have right-of-way in a marked crosswalk.
- Stops required at railway crossings:
- All
vehicles must stop before crossing a railway grade crossing--
if signals or flagmen warn of the approach of a train.
- Only
vehicles carrying inflammable liquids or explosive substances
must stop.
- You don't
have to stop if you can't see a train coming.
- Who may not be cited for violating the child safety
belt and passenger restraint requirements for infants and children
through age 15?
- Parent
who permit their child(ren) to travel unrestrained.
- Drivers
transporting unrestrained children whose parents are not in
the vehicle.
- Unrestrained
children.
- A driver meeting or overtaking a stopped school bus with
its red lights flashing shall stop, unless:
- The school
bus is stopped at a place or intersection where a traffic
officer or a traffic signal controls traffic.
- The driver
meeting the school bus is on the opposite side of a divided
highway (one divided into two or more roadways by barriers
or by a dividing section at least two feet wide, unpaved or
bordered with curbs, double parallel lines or other markings).
- Either
of the above.
- If your vehicle is disabled on the roadway and is equipped
with a working "four-way flasher" device:
- You may
activate the flashers if you reasonably believe your vehicle
creates a hazard.
- You
must activate the flashers as a warning to other motorists.
- You need
to activate the flashers only if disabled 30 minutes or later
after sunset.
This
sign means:
- No passing.
- Cross
traffic must give you the right-of-way.
- Let
cross traffic go by first.
- Pulling out from curb parking space:
- No
person shall start the movement of a parked vehicle until
such movement can be made with reasonable safety.
- Give
arm signal and sound horn as warning-- then start moving away
from curb.
- Signal,
then pull out into traffic after yielding to 3 vehicles.
- All states have a Zero Tolerance Law for drivers under 21,
to prevent their driving with any "measurable" amount
of alcohol. In California, drivers younger than 21 may not drive
a motor vehicle with a BAC of:
- 0.01%
- 0.04%
- 0.08%
- Passing school grounds where a school warning sign is posted
and children are going to or coming from school:
- Prima
facie speed limit 25 mph.
- Prima
facie speed limit 15 mph.
- Prima
facie speed limit 30 mph after 12:00 noon.
- A two-way left-turn lane in the middle of a street will show
pavement striping on each side of this lane as follows:
- Two solid
lines.
- Solid
lines outside, dashed lines inside.
- Dashed
outside lines, solid inside lines.
- When another car has stopped at a marked or unmarked crosswalk
at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross, you may pass
the stopped car:
- On the
right if the pedestrian is crossing toward the left, or on
the left if the pedestrian is crossing toward the right.
- On either
side if the pedestrian is in front of the stopped vehicles.
- Under
no circumstances.
- Unless there is space to accommodate your vehicle on the
other side of an intersection or rail crossing, the Anti-Gridlock
Law forbids all of the following, except:
- Entering
a marked crosswalk or an intersection to proceed or turn.
- Entering
a railroad or rail transit crossing.
- Changing
lanes in an intersection.
- Who may not be cited for violating the safety belt
law?
- Drivers,
if they or their passengers (16 or older) are unrestrained.
- Passengers
(16 or older) who are unrestrained.
- The
registered owner who is not present in the vehicle.
- A driver convicted of passing a stopped school bus displaying
flashing red lights can be punished as follows:
- By a
fine of up to $100 for each violation, no matter how many.
- Not at
all-- because the bus is stopped, so it's not a moving violation.
- By
a $150-$250 first offense fine, a $500-$1000 second offense
fine, and a one-year suspension for a third offense within
three years.
- If a police officer or fire fighter on duty tells you to
proceed against a red traffic light, you should:
- Report
him to police authorities.
- Do
as he tells you.
- Obey
the red "stop" light.
This
sign means:
- Sidewalk
ends.
- Pedestrian
crossing.
- Yield
to oncoming traffic.
- When entering or crossing a highway from public or private
property, or from an alley, which must yield the right-of-way?
- The
car entering the highway.
- The car
traveling on the highway.
- Neither
car.
- If you are arrested for driving under the influence and you
refuse to submit to a chemical test of alcohol in your body, your
license will be suspended for:
- 90 Days.
- 6 Months.
- 1 Year.
- Prima facie speed limit in a business district:
- 25
mph.
- 30 mph.
- 35 mph.
- If a left turn can be made from two designated left-turn
lanes, you can start a "U" turn from:
- Either
lane.
- Only
the leftmost turn lane.
- Both
lanes, unless a sign prevents it.
- The fine has increased to $100 plus $170 for Penalty Assessment,
for all of the following driver behaviors at traffic lights, except:
- Proceeding
on a yellow light.
- Failure
to stop for a red light or a flashing red stop signal.

- The driver of a vehicle involved in any accident resulting
in injury to or death of any person must make a written report
of such accidents to the California Highway Patrol, or, if in
a city, to either the CHP or local police department:
- Within
10 days.
- Within
24 hours.
- At the
scene of the accident.
- If there is a stop sign at a corner without a limit line,
you must first stop:
- Out far
enough to be able to see cross traffic.
- After
crossing the crosswalk.
- At,
but before, the crosswalk.
- Passing the vehicle ahead of you on the right-hand, unpaved
shoulder of the roadway or shoulder of a freeway is:
- Against
the law.
- Permitted
if the car ahead is turning left.
- Permitted
if you are exiting the freeway.
- Return to right side after passing:
- Do not
return to right side of road until you are 250 feet ahead
of overtaken vehicle.
- The driver
of the vehicle which has been passed on the left must slow
down to allow you to return to the right side of the road.
- Do
not return to the right side of the roadway until your action
will not interfere with the safe operation of the overtaken
vehicle.
